Disabled But Not Disheartened...

Savitri was a very active woman till she was struck by paralysis.  Her movements were confined to her home.  She felt she was a burden to her daughter-in-law Rani, who was a widow.  Rani was working as a housemaid in a nearby house.  She had a pretty daughter - Vidya who was born dumb.  She was admitted in a special school where training was given to deaf and dumb children.
***
Savithri was able to get a wheelchair by the generosity of a Lions Club.  After deep thinking, she decided to buy flowers, make pretty garlands and sell.
***
Savithri had a pet dog.  She named it 'Leader'.  Leader was so much attached to Savithri that she followed her like a shadow.  Leader was trained to pick up a basket containing a note and money, go to a flower merchant and bring flowers.  Leader's help was a great relief to the disabled Savithri.
***
Nearby Savithri's house there was a park.  A small Ganesh Temple was located just opposite to the entrance of the part.  She used to sit at the entrance of the park and prepare flower garlands while having the darshan of Lord Ganesh. She used to spend few hours to sell the flower garlands.  Before she left the place in the night, she handedover the remaining garlands to the priest to adom Lord Ganesh.
***
Savithri was able to earn about Rs. 100/- per day after meeting the cost of the flowers.  She was contented and grateful to God for keeping her active and useful inspite of her disability.

What is Prayer..Swami Chinmayananda...

Through prayer alone devotion is deepened and fulfilled.  To turn ardently our hearts into the Lord, to offer our all at His Altar in our infinite love, to bow down in total surrender at His feet, to cry in the joy of the flooding love, this is prayer at its fullest.  Where individuality is merged in His sacred temple of Love, Universality starts, the experience of the Infinite in us unfolds.

Harnessing the Mind-Power.

When we are told that we must control our minds we wonder why we should do this.  What is wrong if you live and act as your minds demand, as you feel like at any moment.

No harm.  The Lord has given you a splendid mind and a beautiful world.  But always remember that the entire Niagara Falls Cannot light up a even a single bulb until it is tunnelled on to the dynamo.

Steam cannot make the steam engine work unless it is contained.  The mind cannot bring out its full force and strength to achieve for you success, unless it is disciplined, tunneled and contained.....

How To Overcome Your Shyness...Dr. Anjana Maitra

Shyness is a human quality that everybody feels at some point of time in their lives.
.....
Shyness reveals itself in various ways - dry mouth, shaking hands, sweaty palms, loss of words, etc.
.......
Where does shyness come from?  In some cases, genes contribute.  Parents of shy children are often shy themselves.  The social environment or certain incidents of our early life also make us shy.  For example, if you are a sensitive child and your teacher ridicules you for giving a wrong answer in the class, you may not raise your hand to give an answer in future.
..............
At the root of shyness is self-doubt, leading to self-defeat.  Professionally we are afraid to express our needs and goals to our superiors.  Socially, we are unable to go forward and say "hellow" and we by-pass the opportunity of meeting an important person.
..........................
More often than not, we feel that everyone's eyes are looking at us, each of our smallest actions are being minutely observed and that our manners or gestures are under a searching look.  As a result we stop going out, avoid mixing with people, do not take the initiative to introduce ourselves at a social gathering, expressing our views and so on.
......................................
How, then, can we fight against shyness?  A few tips given below will help you to overcome shyness and face the world bravely.
...........
Don't Avoid Situations-- Our shyness is often increased when we avoid certain situations.  For Example, opportunity to give a talk, attending a party where most invitees may be unknown, participating in a Group Discussion and so on.  It is better to move forward and take advantage of the opportunity.
.....................
Think Positivie -- Positive thinking can help you to conquer almost any difficulty.  Don't encourage any self-doubts, e.g. "Is my dress OK for the occasion?"  "Am I well prepared for the presentation?" or "Shall I have a friend at the party?" and so on.  Pay attention to your body language - look friendly, make eye contact and smile....
.................................
Take Small Steps -- Don't set a big goal for yourself when you want to get rid of your shyness. If you are terrified of public speaking, Start by addressing your most trusted adult (parent or grandparent) then move to a small group of friends.  Then move to larger groups and after sometime your stage-fear will disappear and you will enjoy talking at the mike.
..............
Identify the causes...  Identify the causes of your shyness.  It could be something to do with your general appearance (your unruly hair, obesity etc.) or your slight stammer/unconscious gestures, or even a personality trait like forgetfulness.  Whatever it is, once you have identified it, you can go about rectifying it.  You can get a smart hair-cut, reduce weight, get your skin treated; your stammer may hardly be noticeable.  Try to remember names by jotting them down in your diary.  Conscious effort to work on weak points definitely pays rich dividends.  More often than not, it is inferiority complex that contributes to shyness.
..................................
Join the crowd...  Joining a crowd is always easier.  So go ahead and join fund raising drive, signature campaign or a 'Walk for the Environment' with others, participate in a Group Discussion, join a group of people at a party discussing the latest Cricket Match and offer your views.  Soon you will feel your shyness disappearing.
...............................................
Appreciate yourself and look for ways to improve...  Remember, no one is perfect- everyone is born with good and bad qualities.  First count your blessings and remember your good qualities.  Then, learn to accept your faults and failures.
................
Shyness is a natural and common trait and there is nothing to get worried about...."BALVIHAR"

How Thermos Keeps Coffee Hot Or Lemonade Cool...

According to Prevost's Theory of Exchange, the colder of two bodies always absorbs heat waves until both bodies are the same temperature.  By this theory, it would be natural for scalding coffee or ice-cold lemonade in a Thermos to lose heat or gain it respectively.  But a Thermos is designed to cut down the exchange of heat between the inside and the outside of the bottle by hampering the three ways in which heat can travel :
Conduction, Convection, and Radiation.
A standard Thermos, made of metal or plastic, has an inner container consisting of a double glass bottle.  A near vacuum exists between the two layers of glass, and the lips of the bottles are sealed by melting the edges together.  Glass is used because it is a poor conductor of heat, which means that in glass heat does not pass rapidly from molecule to molecule as it does in a better heat conductor such as copper.  The stopper and pads that hold the bottle in place in the outer container are generally made of cork, also a very poor conductor of heat.  The near vacuum between the two layers of glass limits the possibility of heat escaping from or penetrating the Thermos by convection - the transmission of heat by means of the movement of heated matter from one place to another in a liquid or gas.  Since, however, heat can travel through a vacuum by radiation, the facing surfaces of glass are coated with a silvery solution of aluminium which reflects heat waves and does not absorb them.
***
Sir James Dewar invented the thermos or "Vacuum bottle" in 1885 to keep heat from the liquid gas with which he was experimenting.  The happy by-product of his ingenuity has made our life pleasurable when we are on a picnic or long distance travel.

Have You Ever Wondered?

******
Have you ever wondered, how bees take nectar and make it into honey.
***
How trees are made into paper, and paper into money.
***
How the Sun is so far away, yet we feel the heat,
***
How the tongue is what allows us to talk.
***
How a little bird knows how to fly when it leaves the nest,
***
How our bodies are so active, and suddenly we need to rest.
***
How we lie down at night, and put ourselves to sleep,
***
How dreams are allowed in our minds to creep.
***
How our emotions are stirred and we can cry,
***
How we suddenly become happy and the tears are dried.
***
How we seem to be 'oh! so fine',
***
And instantly we can be half out of our mind.
***
How one day we have a friend, and one day we don't,
***
How sometimes people help us, and sometimes they won't.
***
How by hands of a clock moving, time goes by.
***
How fingernails seem to grow from under the skin,
***
How peace is said to come from within,
***
How we plant grain, and harvest corn,
***
How some babies are hatched and others are born.

***

If we have ever wondered and asked why,
The answer lies alone with the MAKER in the sky,.... Just wondering... Have you ever wondered?

Next morning the traveller and the stranger were about to leave and go in different ways. At that time the stranger confessed that he was a robber. Just then a walnut snapped off and fell on mullah Nasruddin's bald head. He got up at once and lifting up his hand and face towards heaven, he said:

Change Yourself First...Swamy Vivekananda...

We have seen that it is the subjective world that rules the objective.  Change the subject, and the object is bound to change; purify yourself, and the world is bound to be purified.  This one thing requires to be taught now more than ever before.  This one thing requires to be taught now more than ever before.  We are becoming more and more busy about our neighbours, and less and less about ourselves.  The world will change if we change; if we are pure, the world will become pure.  The question is why I should see evil in others.  I cannot see evil unless I be evil.  I cannot be miserable unless I am weak.  Things that used to make me miserable when I was a child, do not do so now.  The subject changed, so the object was bound to change; so says the Vedanta.
***
Thus the man that has practiced control over himself cannot be acted upon by anything outside; there is no more slavery for him.  His mind has become free.  Such a man alone is fit to live well in the world.  We generally find men holding two opinions regarding the world.  Some are pessimists and say, "How horrible this world is, how wicked!"  Some others are optimists and say, "How beautiful this world is, how wonderful!"  To those who have not controlled their own minds, the world is either full of evil or at best a mixture of good and evil.  This very world will become to us an optimistic world when we become masters of our own minds.  Nothing will then work upon us a good or evil; we shall find everything to be in its proper place, to be harmonious.
***
The more we grow in love and virtue and holiness, the more we see love and virtue and holiness outside.  All condemnation of others really condemns ourselves.  Adjust the microcosm (which is in your power to do) and the macrocosm will adjust itself for you.  It is like the hydrostatic paradox, one drop of water can balance the universe.  We cannot see outside what we are not inside.  The universe is to us what the huge engine is to the miniature engine; and indication of any error in the tiny engine leads us to imagine trouble in the huge one.
***
Every step that has been really gained in the world has been gained by love; criticising can never do any good, it has been tried for thousands of years.  Condemnation accomplishes nothing.

Words In Their Contexts...

The ability of a language user lies in using a right word in a right context.  This ability enables one to encode or express ideas in a better way.  To attain this end, one must be able to group together of individual word-meanings or phrase-meanings that generally share the same idea, concept, or semantic area.  They mean the same thing in a general way, but they entail certain key differences.  These differences govern why one word sounds natural or correct in a particular sentence and why another word, apparently close in meaning to the first word, does not sound right.  For example: "Because" in its varied shades is used to explain why something happened, why you did something etc.
***

How To Control Our Mind...

*  Mind can be controlled by constant effort to fix it on God.

*  Sit alone and watch the mind and its movements.

*  Be indifferent and unattached.  Remain a witness.  Do not identify yourself with the thoughts.

*  Do not think of the past.  Do not plan for the future.  Live in the present

*  Read spiritual books.  Do meditation regularly.  Participate in satsang.

*  Do help a person in need or suffering.

*  Repetition of a mantra destroys impurities of the mind.

*  Make the mind inward.  In this Kali Yuga, the easiest way for controlling the mind is singing the Lord's name.

*  Food influences the mind.  Take fruits, vegetables and nuts frequently.

*  Practise moderation in diet.  Selfless service with a feeling of unity with everyone is highly effective in purifying the mind.  Do not struggle with the mind.

*  Be regular in your sadhana.

Frustration-A Positive Force..

Everyone experiences one kind of frustration or another everyday.  Whenever we are crushed under it, it becomes a chronic type of negative feeling.  But when we derive some stimulation from it, it helps us solve a problem, not to yield to it.  So frustration can be turned into a positive force.
***
We have a servo-mechanism within us which can create ideas and find solutions to problems transforming us into creative artists.  Instead, too many of us jam our creative mechanism with worry, anxiety and fear.  This jamming of the creative servo-mechanism with worry, anxiety and fear.  This jamming of the creative servo-mechanism doesn't serve us at all.  It inhibits us from our goals, putting a road-block of negation infront of us.  creating frustration.
***
The road blocks of frustration are :  We worry not only before making a decision but after.  We carry this in our minds all day.  The cure?  Express anxiety before, but not after making a decision.  Once we choose a road to take, we must stop worrying and call upon the confidence of past successes to guide us in the present.
***
We must stop the worry and feel about yesterday, today and tomorrow.  Think of only today.  Treat everyday as complete lifetime.  Do your best, respond to the present.  Try, try, try - now, now.
 ***
Don't clutter your day.  Do one thing at a time.  It frees you from the burden of hurry and failure.
***
Relax well.  Put aside everything.  A good night's rest brings a beautiful and hopeful day back.  Don't wrestle with your problems twenty-four hours.  So relaxation helps you overcome frustration.  Don't think of it.  Work for it.  Do it - Now.  Remember these words of Plate, "NOTHING IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN IS WORTH WORRYING ABOUT."......

Control your Nagative Emotions...Swamy Vivekananda

We must have these four sorts of ideas.  We must have friendship for all; we must be merciful towards those that are in misery; when people are happy, we ought to be happy; and to the wicked we must be indifferent.  So with all subjects that come before us.  If the subject is a good one, we shall feel friendly towards it; if the subject of thought is one that is miserable, we must be merciful towards it.  If it is good, we must be glad; if it is evil, we must be indifferent.  These attitudes of the mind towards the different subjects that come before it will make the mind peaceful.  Most of our difficulties in our daily lives come from being unable to hold our minds in this way.  For instance, if a mind does evil to us, instantly we want to react evil, and every reaction of evil shows that we are not able to hold the chitta down; it comes out in waves towards the object, and we lose our power.  Every reaction in the form of hatred or evil is so much loss to the mind; and every evil thought or deed of hatred, or any thought of reaction, if it is controlled, will be laid in our favour.  It is not that we lose by thus restraining ourselves; we are gaining infinitely more than we suspect.  Each time we suppress hatred, or a feeling of anger, it is so much good energy stored up in our favour; that piece of energy will be converted into the higher powers.
***
Every vicious thought will rebound, every thought of hatred which you may have thought, in a cave even, is stored up, and will one day come back to you with tremendous power in the form of some misery here.  If you project hatred and jealousy, they will rebound on you with compound interest.  Now power can avert them; when once you have put them in motion, you will have to bear them.  Remembering this will prevent you from doing wicked things.
***
I may remark that this idea explains the ethical theory that you must not hate, and must love.  Because, just as in the case of electricity the modern theory is that the power leaves the dynamo and completes the circle back to the dynamo, so with hate and love; they must come back to the source.  Therefore do not hate anybody, because that hatred which comes out from you, must, in the long run, come back to you.  If you love, that love will come back to you, completing the circle.  It is as certain as can be, that every bit of hatred that goes out of the heart of a man comes back to him in full force, nothing can stop it; similarly every impulse of love comes back to him.
***
The greatest secret is--absence of jealousy.  Be always ready to concede to the opinions of your brethren, and try always to conciliate.  That is the whole secret.  Fight on bravely!  Life is short!  Give it up to a great cause.
